What is Choosing Happiness?

11 03 2010

Well, I think it’s time for me to talk about this blog. I do have a reason for creating , but I’ll get to that soon. So let’s start the story here.

I don’t know about you, but I feel that someone forgot to tell me that the most important goal in life is to be happy.  Did the fax slide off the table and behind the cabinet? Sure feels like it did.

About 3 years ago I was sitting in a  weekend workshop when the instructor looked at me and said “Mark, maybe you need to focus on being happy”.  It was like a slap across the face. That statement was so empowering , a wake up call. Up to that point I was living my life-like everything I did was a job, and a struggle. Like some destination that I had to slog to and if I was lucky a brief slice of satisfaction would open up.

Why didn’t anyone (my parents or family) tell me that being happy was the only goal that I had to focus on?  Why wasn’t developing happiness taught in school?  Why didn’t anyone teach me to get up everyday and look for happiness in my life or to make myself happy.

But, no one did tell me or even hint at it.  It’s strange. So, at the age of 50 I got  turned onto to the new idea that I get to choose happiness.  And, not just choosing, but discovering what happy looks and feels like to me. This is new territory me and I do have days where I slide back into my old habits of forgetting or being pulled off with some task that I have to handle.

The important thing for me to remind myself is to stop and ask myself am I happy in this moment, will this task make me happy? If it doesn’t I stop it and re-focus myself on the real task of being happy.

So, that’s why I’m developing this blog. I want to share my trek to happiness, I want to share my journey with the readers or others who are also on this path. I don’t think I’m alone at all.

Happily there will be more to come.
